Mitral regurgitation is a condition characterized by leakage of blood through a diseased mitral valve. If severe, it can lead to progressive shortness of breath and heart failure. Mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair is an innovative technique where the heart is approached using a catheter inserted through the groin and the mitral valve leaflets are grasped with a small clipping device. This device is then left in place in the heart. In carefully chosen patients, it can lead to complete eradication of the leakage. This leads to salutary improvement in patient’s hear function as well as sleepier from symptoms. It is a boon for elderly patients who are very sick and are severely restricted in their activities because of weakened heart function. Here in Apollo Multispeciality Hospital Kolkata, we are doing such procedures routinely with good results, because of our well equipped Cath labs and excellent interventional surgeons.
This patient is a 75 year old female with diabetes hypertension, sleep apnea, atrial fibrillation and obesity as comorbidities. She was having repeated episodes of heart failure requiring hospitalization. The reason was the presence of severe mitral regurgitation along with the atrial fibrillation. She was carefully evaluated and stabilized medically, before being taken up for MTEER. The clipping resulted in immediate cessation of all regurgitation. She became fully conscious after completion of procedure. The hemodynamic parameters also improved. She required no hemodynamic support during or after the procedure.

Performed on Monday 13th April 2026.
